When we talk about retirement adequacy, many people tend to focus heavily on their investment portfolio.
โHow much can I earn?โ
โShould I invest my CPF to get higher returns?โ
โWhy leave money in CPF at 2.5% when I could potentially earn more elsewhere?โ
These are valid questions.
But I think thereโs another question that often gets overlooked:
The recent CPF changes โ including the upcoming increase in CPF contribution rates for older workers and the new CPF investment option planned for 2028 โ are a good reminder that CPF remains an important part of Singaporeansโ retirement planning.
Yet I still see many clients underestimate just how important it can be.
For me, one of the biggest advantages of CPF is not just the return.
It is ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐๐.
A risk-free return of at least 2.5% provides a valuable safety net โ especially when CPF may be the ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐๐ผ๐น๐๐๐ฒ ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ณ๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ when everything else doesn’t go according to plan.
Markets can fall.
Investments can underperform.
Unexpected expenses can happen.
But having a pool of relatively stable retirement savings that you haven’t exposed to investment risk can provide an important layer of resilience.
That’s why I generally don’t advocate investing CPF simply because there is a possibility of earning higher returns elsewhere.

Some dollars need to be there for certainty.
And sometimes, the best retirement plan isn’t the one that maximises returns.
